In the constant back and forth between Nubia and Ancient Egypt, the city-state of Napata was founded in the shadow of Jebel Barkal, the sacred mountain of the Nubians. The ruins of the city, including the Temple of Amun, are within walking distance of the Nubian Rest House, a true jewel of the desert.

The property offers 22 A/C rooms that lack no comforts. The rest house is built in the traditional Nubian style, and pays close attention to detail: from the wall paintings in the bathrooms, to the delicately decorated door that serves as entrance to the complex. The house is open year round and ideally positioned to explore the sites around Jebel Barkal.

The camp is remote and the generator goes out at around 11pm, so be sure to bring a torch with you. I would not mind much about that, because the night sky is rather spectacular, and a full day of roaming ancient ruins guarantees a good night’s sleep.
